I’m Caleb Stauss, a product designer and design engineer based in Northwest Arkansas. For more than 15 years, I’ve helped teams turn early ideas, complex systems, and messy product challenges into digital experiences people understand, use, and trust. My work sits between vision and execution, shaping unclear opportunities into structured products that can launch, scale, and hold up under pressure.

Most design problems are not just design problems. They are structure problems, logic gaps, and decisions that were never made explicit. I start by deconstructing those layers, finding the real shape of the problem, and building the system that gives the team a path forward. I’ve worked across enterprise platforms, internal tools, live sports infrastructure, avionics interfaces, Web3 verification systems, healthcare, retail technology, and early stage product bets. The industries change, but the work is often the same: turning unclear complexity into something people can use.

Experience

Freelance Product Design & Consultant

Stauss Design / Whoa

Jan 2011 - Present

I run an independent design practice working with clients ranging from first-time founders with a concept on a napkin to some of the largest brands and retailers in the world. The work spans fintech, healthcare, retail technology, Web3, sports media, aviation, emergency response, and consumer products.

Most clients come to me when the path isn't clear yet. I turn fragmented requirements, legacy debt, and open-ended problems into concrete systems, working models, and build-ready product direction.

One engagement ships live on ESPN. TokenProof, a token-gated access platform I led design for, was acquired by Yuga Labs. A third engagement ended in acquisition by one of the largest moving and relocation companies in North America.

I manage every layer of the practice: proposals, contracts, client relationships, delivery timelines, and vendor coordination. Fifteen years of doing this has made me faster at the parts that usually slow things down.

Product Experience Lead

Heartland Whole Health Institute

Sep 2020 - Sep 2022

I joined as the first product design hire at an institute working to fundamentally change how healthcare is practiced in America, moving away from volume-driven care toward a whole-person, preventative model built around the patient.

I inherited a handful of contractor files and no design function. Everything else got built from scratch: product design, website design and development, design systems, intranet architecture, internal tooling, presentation systems, and organizational communication templates.

The hard part wasn't the volume. It was translating an ambitious, evolving institutional mission into systems and standards that teams could actually use without me in the room. I established UX standards, brand governance, and digital experience guidelines that gave the organization a consistent operating language across channels and stakeholder groups.

I worked directly with leadership, operations, communications, and product strategy, connecting mission-level goals with clear digital infrastructure before fragmentation became organizational debt.

Senior Product Designer, Design Systems

NerdWallet

Apr 2020 - Sep 2020

I was brought in as a contract design systems specialist to help rethink NerdWallet's design system. What started as a rebuild became Currency, a unified system spanning financial editorial, consumer tools, and SaaS products.

The core problem wasn't the components. It was that the system was slower to use than to bypass. I rebuilt the documentation model around how designers and engineers actually work, introducing a variants-first structure that cut the time to find component variants by 50%.

I established contribution pathways, component documentation standards, design guidelines, grid tooling, and a Chrome extension for layout enforcement across Figma and Storybook. Adoption came through internal product marketing, quarterly roadmaps, and direct collaboration with teams that had real delivery friction.

Within the first month post-launch: documentation visits tripled, satisfaction across designers and engineers hit 80%, and the contribution model was actually being used.

I ran intensive on-site discovery workshops with stakeholders from individual contributors to C-suite executives, using talk shows, card sorting, affinity mapping, persona development, transformation stories, and breakout design sessions to separate inherited assumptions from actual constraints.

The output wasn't just research. It was clear product opportunities, prioritized user needs, decision frameworks, and executive-ready strategic recommendations that leadership teams could actually evaluate, fund, and build from.

I led the post-workshop design sprint, consolidating everything into wireframes, high-fidelity prototypes, vision decks, user testing plans, and product narratives delivered within a two-week window.

Clients included Chevron, Walmart, Sam's Club, Virgin Hotels, Purina, UniGroup, H-E-B, Zappos, and Toll Brothers across retail, energy, hospitality, logistics, and consumer industries.

I owned product design for Lucy, RichContext's flagship Rich Content Management and Publishing Platform, used by some of the largest CPG brands in the world including Coca-Cola, P&G, Unilever, Hershey's, and General Mills.

The core design challenge was building a configurable module system that could render rich media experiences across Kroger, Walmart, Amazon, Meijer, and other major retailers without feeling like a re-theme. Each environment had different layouts, technical restrictions, and brand guardrails. The solution had to feel native to wherever it landed, not adapted to it.

I designed the full platform surface: dashboards, product catalog management, experience builders, module builders, publication and distribution tooling, media management, analytics, and client administration across Admin, Brand, and Client portals.

Shipped module patterns including 360 Product Tours, filtered carousels, Shop the Look, bundled products, influencer galleries, cross-brand product bundlers, video galleries, and UGC modules. Collaborated directly with founders, the CEO, and engineering across the broader product suite to keep enterprise workflows practical for the content teams actually using them daily.

I founded and ran a small studio doing brand strategy, visual identity systems, website design, and digital product design. I handled client acquisition, scoping, creative direction, contractor management, and delivery across multiple concurrent engagements.

Directed contractors and collaborators across brand and digital work, maintaining consistency across strategy, visual design, interface execution, and delivery standards.

Running the studio taught me how design craft, client trust, and commercial clarity either hold together or fall apart in the same moment.

Aug 2015 - Aug 2016

I designed UX and UI patterns for Walmart internal tools and employee-facing applications covering store operations, task workflows, workforce management, and frontline associate needs across the U.S. footprint.

The work wasn't done in a conference room. I conducted in-store UX testing inside active Walmart locations, pressure-testing interaction patterns against real operational conditions, Zebra MC40 hardware, and time-sensitive associate workflows. Cross-device usability across Bring Your Own Device environments was a core constraint, not an afterthought.

I contributed to an enterprise design system standardizing the interface language for migrating legacy tools to a modern Ionic and Angular framework, and extended design support across AI-powered security recognition systems and CPG data tools that helped teams understand and act on in-store sales signals.

BlkBoxLabs / Love & Rockets

Nov 2014 - Jul 2015

I came in and established core UX and UI design practices that didn't exist yet, influencing design culture, hiring standards, client process, and the collaboration model between design and engineering.

Led the Acceptance Insurance redesign, a multi-step quote wizard, authenticated policy management portal, account dashboard, payment flows, responsive UI patterns, and a comprehensive digital style guide. Also designed social listening and brand sentiment dashboards for CPG clients tracking consumer conversation across Glad, Clorox, Brita, and Burt's Bees.

Supported a healthcare standardization initiative across Dell Children's Medical Center and Seton Healthcare within the Ascension network, balancing institution-specific brand needs against scalable UX architecture. Delivered the Dell Children's Blood and Cancer Center site and a physician profile administration system that gave doctors and practice managers a structured intake and review flow for public-facing profile content.

Feb 2011 - Nov 2014

I designed responsive websites, ecommerce experiences, visual systems, UI patterns, content platforms, and campaign interfaces for brands including Vega, Mountain Khakis, IntelliSkin, Remington Outdoor Company, Nike sub-brands, and Linfield University.

For Vega I designed an entire digital ecosystem spanning the main marketing site, eStore, VegaSport, recipe center, meal plans, athlete community, and content platform. Every surface had to balance brand expression, conversion, storytelling, and product education without any of them losing to the others.

I developed production interfaces in HTML, CSS, and SCSS, translating visual direction into frontend systems that could survive real content, real devices, and real brand constraints. This is where I built the implementation fluency that later shaped how I think about design systems, component architecture, and the relationship between design decisions and what actually ships.
